How To Arrange Throws Pillows on a Sectional Sofa
Have you always wanted your living space to look effortlessly elegant? One way to achieve this is to artfully decorate your sofas and sectionals with throw pillows to make them look plush and inviting. Pillows are also a great way to add a pop of colour to a neutral-coloured sectional to tie it in with the rest of the décor in your room.
There are three important rules to follow when you start ‘Project Pillow’:
- Use plenty of throw pillows of different sizes.
- Be ready to experiment.
- Have fun!
Styling a sofa with two ends can be quite straightforward – simply arrange your pillows on the two ends and you’re good to go. A sectional sofa, however, can be a little trickier. Read on for our top tips and tricks to make your sectional look like it has been styled by a professional designer.
How many throw pillows should you use on a sectional sofa?
This depends on the size and seating capacity of your sectional sofa. A general rule of thumb is to use an odd number of pillows because you have a corner to contend with. Seven to nine pillows work well for larger sectionals while you can get away with as little as three throw pillows on smaller ones like the Dolores Sectional w/Pull out. Remember not to use too many throw pillows or you’ll find yourself with very little space to sit!
What size pillows does a sectional sofa need?
You can get playful with the sizes and shapes of the pillows you choose for your sectional sofa. Use pillows of different sizes to play with visual perception. You can start with two 22″ pillows on the ends with smaller 20” inch pillows in front of them at either end. Use the same combination in the corner but throw in a lumbar pillow or an 18” pillow too. Depending on the size of your sectional you can add more pillows in the corner to create a focal point.
It’s also a good idea to use pillow covers that are a size smaller than the actual pillows to keep them looking plump and inviting. So, if you want a 22” inch pillow, use a 24” pillow insert in a 22” pillow cover. The good news with Q Living Furniture is that all our decor pillows include the insert, so no worrying about any sizing issues required!
The Martino Transformational Sectional offers storage in the corner headrests to tidy away extra pillows when you want to make room on your sectional on game nights and crowded parties.
What about fabrics, colours, and patterns?
This really comes down to personal taste. You can really go to town with patterns and colours when you have a neutral-coloured sectional like the Pamina Sectional w. Pull Out. However, you don’t want your carefully curated décor to look garish. Choose a mixture of plain tones and patterns, simple fabrics and textured ones. Typically, pick patterned fabrics for the middle-sized pillow and more neutral colours and tones for the others. Picking colours from the pattern to use on the large and small pillows can tie them all together neatly.
You can also drape throws like this Lanie Throw over one arm of your sectional or to one side of the corner to add to the appeal. Throws look especially cozy in the colder months – so feel free to change up your décor as the seasons change.
As you can see, styling your sectional isn’t really difficult – all you need are some great pillows and throws and the willingness to experiment. Browse our sofas and sectionals and find the one you want to style.
